How to run a dares game

Dares only is simpler than truth or dare and it moves faster. Everyone takes a turn, the group picks a dare from the level you are on, and you either do it or pass. Passing costs a forfeit you agreed at the start, and nothing else.

Agree three things first: a safe word that stops everything, the level you are starting at, and what a pass costs. Two minutes of setup is the difference between a good night and an awkward one.

Gentle dares Gentle

Warm ups. Funny rather than revealing, and nothing here needs anyone to touch anyone.

  1. Do your best impression of someone in the room until the group guesses who it is.
  2. Let the group choose a song and sing the chorus standing up.
  3. Read out the last message you sent, in the voice of a news reader.
  4. Speak only in questions until your next turn.
  5. Let the person on your left restyle your hair however they like.
  6. Show the group the last five photos in your camera roll.
  7. Do twenty seconds of your best dancing with no music.
  8. Swap one item of clothing with whoever is sitting opposite you, if they are up for it.
  9. Say something you genuinely like about the person on your right.
  10. Let the group pick a new nickname for you. It stands for the rest of the night.
  11. Talk continuously about anything for one minute without stopping.
  12. Send a genuinely kind message to a friend who is not here, and read it out first.
  13. Let someone in the group choose your next drink.
  14. Do your worst attempt at a cartwheel, or a convincing mime of one.
  15. Recreate a famous film scene with a volunteer who agrees to it.

  19. Do an advert for something in the room as if you are selling it on television.
  20. Keep a straight face while the group tries to make you laugh for thirty seconds.
  21. Text someone the word "banana" with no explanation and show the group the reply.
  22. Give a one minute speech about why your favourite food is superior.
  23. Let the person on your right draw on your hand with a pen.
  24. Say the alphabet backwards. Every mistake costs you a sip.
  25. Whisper a secret to one person in the room. They decide whether to share it.

Dares for adults, answered

What is a good dare for adults?

A good dare is specific, doable in a minute or two, and asks for consent from anyone else it involves. It should be something the person can say no to without any cost. Dares that put someone on the spot about their body, or that make the group judge them, are the ones that kill a night.

How do you make dares spicy without going too far?

Move up one level at a time and agree where you are stopping before you start. Escalation everyone signed up for almost never goes too far. Escalation nobody planned usually does. A safe word and a free pass are what make the higher levels work.

Can you play dares with just two people?

Yes, and it plays differently. With two people the dares get more intimate faster because there is no group to hide behind. The Playful and Spicy levels tend to work best; Wild is usually more fun once you already know how the other person responds.

What is a good forfeit for passing on a dare?

Something small and agreed in advance. A sip, a question you have to answer honestly, or taking the next dare one level up. Forfeits that single anyone out or drag on tend to stop people passing when they genuinely want to, which defeats the point.

What is the difference between dares and truth or dare?

Dares only removes the choice, so nobody can dodge into an easy truth all night and the pace stays higher. Truth or dare gives people an out, which suits a mixed group. If you want the questions instead, try truth questions for adults.
